Modern Slavery Policy

1. Commitment & Scope

West & Coe Funeral Directors operates ethically and with integrity. As a family-owned, independent business serving local UK communities, we do not tolerate modern slavery or human trafficking in our business or supply chains.

This policy applies to all employees, directors, casual staff (including bearers), contractors, and suppliers.

2. Practical Framework

We ensure compliance with the Modern Slavery Act 2015 by focusing on our immediate operations and direct local supply network. Our core areas of focus include:

  • Funeral Goods: Coffin, casket, and masonry manufacturers.
  • Support Services: Local florists, printers, catering businesses and other extended services offered to our families
  • Operations: Facilities maintenance, uniform suppliers, and cleaning contractors.

3. Internal Protections & Recruitment

We protect our workforce through strict UK employment standards:

  • Right to Work: Checking valid legal documentation for all staff before onboarding.
  • Fair Pay: Ensuring all employees receive at least the UK National Living Wage.
  • Clear Terms: Providing written employment contracts to guarantee stable hours.
  • Casual Labour: Hiring all temporary drivers and bearers directly as independent casual workers, verifying their individual eligibility to work under UK law.

4. Supplier Expectations

While West & Coe is under the statutory turnover threshold for formal annual reporting, we expect our partners to uphold basic human rights. We manage this by:

  • Preference: Choosing established, reputable UK suppliers for imported goods (timber and stone).
  • Communication: Making this policy available to key vendors to outline our ethical standards.

5. Spotting the Signs

  • Staff should remain alert to potential signs of exploitation in third-party contractors (e.g., maintenance crews or external cleaners):

    • Control: Workers appearing coached, fearful, or controlled by an intermediary.
    • Documents: Individuals who do not hold their own identity or right-to-work documents.
    • Well-being: Signs of physical neglect, restricted movement, or psychological withdrawal.

6. Reporting Procedure

If you suspect modern slavery within our business or supply chain, report it immediately. West & Coe guarantees protection from retaliation for any good-faith report.
