Planning your own funeral is not something most people want to think about. But for families who have been through the experience of arranging a funeral for someone else, navigating costs, decisions and paperwork in the middle of grief, the idea of doing that for your loved ones often feels very different.
A prepaid funeral plan is one way to spare your family from both the financial and emotional burden of those decisions. But are they the right choice for your family’s circumstances? And what should you watch out for? This is our honest guide.
What is a prepaid funeral plan?
A prepaid funeral plan allows you to arrange and pay for your own funeral in advance, locking in the services you want, at today’s prices, so that your family does not have to make those decisions or find that money at a time of grief.
When you buy a plan, you agree the details of your funeral with your chosen funeral director. The money you pay is held in a trust fund or insurance policy until it is needed. When the time comes, your funeral director delivers the agreed service, and the funds are released to cover the cost. Funeral Director Services are completely locked in at today’s prices and fully inflation-proof. However, it is important to note that third-party costs, such as crematorium, cemetery, or officiant fees, are separate from the funeral director’s personal charges.
Are prepaid funeral plans regulated?
Yes, and this is important. Since July 2022, prepaid funeral plans have been regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). This means that any company selling funeral plans in the UK must be FCA-authorised, and must follow strict rules about how the money is managed, how plans are sold, and what happens if a company runs into financial difficulties.
Before 2022, the funeral plan market was largely unregulated, and a small number of high-profile company failures left customers out of pocket. FCA regulation has substantially changed this picture. Before committing to any plan, always check that the provider is FCA authorised. You can do this at fca.org.uk/register.
West & Coe works is an appointed representative of Golden Charter Limited, one of the UK’s largest funeral plan providers, with nearly one million plans sold. Golden Charter Limited, trading as Golden Charter Funeral Plans, is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FRN: 965279).
What does a prepaid funeral plan cover?
This varies by plan and by provider, so it is essential to read the details carefully. Most plans cover the funeral director’s services, collection, care of the deceased, a coffin, a hearse, carrying out all arrangements. The specifics will depend on which plan you choose.
What plans typically do not cover are third-party costs (disbursements), the fees paid to outside organisations on your behalf. These include:
- Crematorium fees
- Cemetery or burial plot fees
- Minister or celebrant fees
Some plans include a contribution towards disbursements; others do not. Always check exactly what is and is not covered before you sign.
What if the funeral plan company goes bust?
Under FCA regulation, funds held in trust or insurance policies are protected, meaning that even if a funeral plan company fails, the money you paid should be recoverable and used to fund your funeral as agreed.
The level of protection depends on how the funds are held. Trusts regulated by the FCA must meet strict criteria. Insurance-backed plans are also regulated. If you have concerns about a specific provider, check their FCA registration and ask explicitly how your money is protected.
Can I pay monthly?
Yes, most prepaid funeral plans offer the option to pay in instalments rather than in a single lump sum. Monthly payment plans make the cost more manageable, though it is worth noting that:
- Some plans charge interest on monthly payments, check whether the total cost is higher than the lump sum option.
- If you die before completing all payments, some plans will require the remaining balance to be settled from the estate. Others will still provide the funeral at the agreed price. Check the terms carefully.
- Golden Charter, our plan partner, offers both lump sum and monthly payment options, speak with your local West & Coe office for the current options.
What is the difference between a prepaid funeral plan and life insurance?
This is one of the most common questions we hear. The key differences are:
A prepaid funeral plan is specifically for your funeral. The money goes directly towards the services agreed in your plan, delivered by your chosen funeral director. The price is typically locked in at today’s rates.
Life insurance pays out a sum of money to your beneficiaries. They can use it for anything, including a funeral, but there is no guarantee it will cover the cost, and premiums can increase with age. A funeral expenses policy is a type of life insurance specifically designed to cover funeral costs, but the payout is not linked to any specific funeral director or agreed services.
If the most important thing to you is that your funeral is arranged exactly as you would wish and that your family is not left to make difficult decisions, a prepaid funeral plan is generally the more direct route to achieving that.
Are prepaid funeral plans the right choice for your family’s circumstances?
For many families, putting a plan in place offers great comfort, particularly if you relate to the following:
- You wish to protect your family from finding funding at short notice.
- You want to fix the cost of your funeral services at today’s rates.
- You want your unique preferences followed precisely without leaving your family to guess.
- You have the time to look through your choices carefully and calmly.
Of course, a prepaid plan is not always the perfect fit for everyone. If you feel rushed, are facing immediate health concerns, or are still deciding on the right funeral director, it is always best to take your time. As with any meaningful financial decision, understanding exactly what your plan includes brings true confidence. The most valuable step is simply having a chat. A prepaid funeral plan should never feel like a transaction, it is a gentle conversation about your wishes and your family’s peace of mind.
